Elephant Races
When: Apr - May 2010 (annual)
Where: Don Village
Elephant Races take place in the village of Don or in the forests near the Sevepoi River (Dac Lak) every spring (during the third lunar month).]
This festival is the biggest in the Middle Highlands and is typical of the M'nong ethnic group, who are known for their bravery and skill in wild elephant hunting.
The racetrack is 1-2km long, set on even ground where there are only a few big trees, wide enough to accommodate ten running elephants. During the race the crowd uses gongs and horns to encourage the racers and at the end the winning elephants raise their trunks in the air. |
